Comparing the Dose/Response Effects of Mediation Training on Empathy. $84.46 This research study intentionally focused on the nonphysical side of wellness by evaluating the effects of two mediation training programs on empathy. The two treatment groups consisted of students enrolled in a 32-hour Basic Mediation training course at the University of Utah’s Murray campus or in a 52.5-hour Conflict Resolution Graduate Certificate Program at the University of Utah’s main campus. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at pretest and posttest by way of an online survey tool, with formal empathy measures including the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the Empathy Quotient-Short Form. Students from two classes in the Department of Health Promotion and Education served as control groups. It was hypothesized that the mediation training groups would show greater increases in empathy than the control groups and that this difference would be more pronounced in students attending the longer-duration mediation course. Analysis of the quantitative data indicated that mediation training appeared to prevent reductions in empathy rather than causing increases in empathy, although not to a level of statistical significance. Analysis of the qualitative data showed that students claimed widespread use of adopting opponents’ perspectives, wanting to help and validate other people, trying to communicate openly and respectfully, and being positively affected in all of these areas by mediation training. While students in all four groups struggled to think rationally when feeling emotionally charged, the mediation students expressed more of an ability to make that transition, particularly when given additional practice, as seen in the long-term mediation group. In addition, a key difference between the mediation students and the control students was that the mediation students had a more positive view of conflict and they also had a stronger tendency to view conflict as representing an "opportunity." These results support the notion that mediation training positively affects empathy development. The outcomes also suggest support for mediation training as an avenue for developing certain nonphysical aspects of wellness, particularly including the emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational dimensions.
